How Affordable Are New Cars?

Would you like to hear something interesting I heard on the radio while driving to work the other day?  Apparently, the average American cannot afford a new car.  Seriously?  How can this be?  I see people buying new cars every day.  Are you telling me that most of these people cannot afford their new vehicles?After doing a little digging around and some research of my own, I found a short article from Bankrate.com that had some intriguing information on how affordable new cars are in 2016. You will be amazed at what they said. I know was.  Reading this article got me thinking and I found myself asking the question, “How much do cars really cost around here in the northeast?”

National New Car Pricing Statistics

According to Kelley Blue Book, the average national price for a new car or light truck is $33,865. In order to determine what an affordable sale price for a new car really is in today’s market, Bankrate assessed the fifty largest cities in the United States for three key pieces of data

1. Median Incomes
2. Average Insurance Costs
3. Sales Tax Information

On top of that, they also calculated in the national 4.24% average interest rate for a 48 month new car loan at the time. Since their analysis earlier this spring not much has changed. At the time of my writing this post, the current average car loan rate has only dropped slightly to 4.13% for the same four year term.

You are probably asking your self the same question I was at this point. So in order to afford an average new car, I need to make over $87,000 a year? Is that what you are telling me Bankrate? That is outrageous!  How many people do you know who make that kind of money?
