This year Jeep decided to completely redesign the 2017 Jeep Compass, dropping the Patriot model from the lineup, and essentially combining the two into one vehicle. First being brought to market in 2007, the Jeep Compass has lasted a full 10 model years, with only one ‘face-lift’ in 2011. That is an incredibly long run, yet in the past year, Jeep still sold almost 100,000 of them. That speaks to the strength of the Jeep brand and the market itself, however, this was one compact SUV that was long overdue for an update. Continue reading as we discuss whether or not the 2017 Jeep Compass is the best SUV in NY and Massachusetts.
Size-wise, the 2017 Jeep Compass was designed to fill a pretty small space in between the Renegade and Cherokee. In fact, some say that the new Compass’s design looks more traditionally “Cherokee” than the current small Cherokee actually does. Comparing measurements with the Renegade, Jeep has lengthened the wheelbase of the Compass to 103.8 (+2.6″ over the Renegade) and the overall length has increased by more than 6 inches. This provides more room for people and stuff inside, with a amazing 4.3 inches more legroom in the rear seats and 4.2 cubic feet in the cargo area.
2017 Jeep Compass Performance
Under the hood of the 2017 Jeep Compass you will for the 2.4-liter “Tigershark” four-cylinder engine. This efficient and well balance engine produces 180 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 175 lb-ft of torque at 3,900 rpm. If you choose to go with a new Jeep Compass Sport or Latitude trim-level you will have the choice of either a six-speed manual, a six-speed automatic or the option of a nine-speed automatic.
Front-wheel drive is standard on the new 2017 Jeep Compass, but of course there is a four wheel drive option – two actually. This is a Jeep after all. Active Drive is a full-time system with a rear axle disconnect that allows front-drive or all-wheel drive when the system senses conditions require it. Also, all 2017 Jeep Compass 4X4 models include Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system. This offers the driver several options Automatic, Snow, Sand, and Mud settings. It also has a Select-Terrain knob that allows drivers to dial in modes for snow, sand and mud.
Let the Adventure Begin in a 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk
Thinking about a little off roading? A new Jeep Compass Trailhawk with Active Drive Low which adds low range, Hill Descent Control, and a Rock setting to the Selec-Terrain system. Both the single range Active Drive and the dual range Active Drive Low systems are capable of sending 100 percent of available torque to any wheel that has grip.
Here, “Low” translates into a numerically higher final drive ratio which in turn creates a better (lower) 20.4:1 crawl ratio, versus the standard 17.6:1 ratio. What that means is the new Jeep Compass Trailhawk will give you a bit more control than a regular Compass model if you find yourself off the beaten path. The Trailhawk not only comes with a unique 4WD system and more aggressive styling, including those trademark bright red tow hooks, but also a 1-inch taller ride height and skid plating all along the underside protecting nearly every component.
More 2017 Jeep Compass Models and Technology
The Compass is available in three other models as well – Sport, Latitude, and a more luxurious Limited. Overall, pretty much all of the technology and luxury options start being available in the Latitude models. In terms of safety, the new Jeep Compass for 2017 includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, park assist, and more. Other available new Jeep Compass safety features also include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and HID headlamps. Replacing the previous generation’s 5- or 7-inch (depending on model) infotainment screen with a big 8.5-inch touchscreen display is likely to make the new navigation system on the 2017 Jeep Compass one of the most popular updates year as well.
How does the 2017 Jeep Compass Ride?
The 2017 Compass might be several inches longer than the Renegade however it is only about 60 pounds heavier. In designing the new 2017 Compass, Jeep was looking raise refinement yet still give drivers a little bit more sporty ride than the smaller Renegade.
Jeep’s designer achieved this with loads of increased shock damping. The new 2017 Jeep Compass feels very nimble and light on its feet. The braking and steering systems are also very responsive as well.
How Much space is in a 2017 Jeep Compass?
There’s no lack of legroom in the new 2017 Jeep Compass that’s for sure. Even in the back seats there is room for a six foot tall adult to sit comfortably. There is admittedly a little less headroom in the back however if you choose a Jeep Compass Limited equipped with the dual-pane sunroof.
