What is the recall?

Honda is recalling over 563,000 CR-Vs manufactured between March 3, 2006 and December 5th, 2011. This recall only applies to states that use salt as a de-icing agent, which could enter the frame of the vehicle through drainage holes when driven through flooded areas or puddles at high speeds where the salt has mixed with the mud or water. This causes corrosion to the frame's internal structure. In some cases, the rust could result in the rear trailing arm separating from the vehicle and causing a loss of control and increasing the chances of a crash or injury.

How do I know if my CR-V is damaged?

A few things to look out for that mean you could have potential damage to your vehicle are clunking or squeaking from the rear, visible rust on the rear of the vehicle, and tire wear. Some CR-V owners have noticed excessive tire wear on one side of the vehicle as opposed to the other. 

If you do not fix your car it has the potential to cause an accident by losing control of the vehicle steering capability, puncture your gas tank or it can cause the wheel to jut out past the body of the car and cause uncontrollable spin. Check out this video for more information:

Letters to the affected owners were sent out by May 8th. These repairs are free of charge at any Honda location. If your vehicle was sold or ever registered in New York, Massachusetts or Connecticut we can help! Our certified technicians will inspect your rear frame for damage and determine whether the frame needs to be replaced. If the rust is so severe Honda may even buy back some of the vehicles. Vehicles that appear to have no damage will get a brace to attach to the rear frame to prevent further damage.
